Default Plans lets you configure which subscription plans are used as the default monthly and annual options across your site. These defaults are used when a subscriber clicks a generic “Subscribe” button without selecting a specific tier or offer.

Go to Subscriptions → Default Plans to configure your defaults.

How it works

The Default Plans page shows two plan selectors:
PlanDescription
MonthlyThe default monthly subscription plan
AnnualThe default annual subscription plan
Each selector shows all available Stripe plans (the priced offers tied to your tiers). Select the plan you want as the default for each billing interval and click Submit to save.

When default plans are used

Default plans are used when:
  • A subscriber clicks a generic subscription button or link that doesn’t specify a tier
  • An embed or CTA references a subscription without specifying a particular offer
  • A subscription flow starts without a specific plan already selected
  • A paywall directs a reader to subscribe without specifying which plan
In all these cases, the subscriber is directed to your default monthly or annual plan rather than seeing an error or being asked to choose.

How default plans relate to tiers

Your default plans are selected from the plans attached to your tiers. If you have multiple tiers (for example, “Basic” and “Premium”), the default plans determine which tier a subscriber lands on when no specific tier is chosen. Key points:
  • The monthly and annual defaults can come from different tiers if needed, though it is most common to set both to the same tier.
  • When you create a new site, Outpost automatically detects your Stripe products and sets default plans based on your existing monthly and annual prices.
  • If your Stripe configuration changes (for example, you create new products or change pricing), you can update the defaults at any time.

When to update default plans

You should review your default plans when:
  • You add a new tier — If the new tier should be the default for new subscribers, update the defaults to point to its plans.
  • You change pricing — If you create new Stripe prices for an existing tier, make sure the defaults still point to the correct plans.
  • You retire a tier — If you discontinue a tier that was set as the default, choose a new default to avoid broken subscription links.
  • You launch a promotion — If you want generic subscribe buttons to direct to a promotional price temporarily, update the defaults (and remember to switch back afterward).
If your site has multiple tiers, make sure your default plans point to the tier you want new subscribers to land on when no specific tier is selected. Most publications set their primary or most popular tier as the default.
Changing the default plan does not affect existing subscribers. It only changes which plan new subscribers see when they click a generic subscribe button.

Frequently asked questions

Outpost automatically detects your Stripe products and sets defaults when your site is first configured. If defaults are missing, generic subscribe buttons may not work correctly. It is a good idea to verify your defaults are set.
Yes, though this is uncommon. Each selector is independent, so you could set monthly to one tier and annual to another. Most publications set both to the same tier.
No. Offers and discounts have their own specific pricing and are not affected by the default plan setting. Default plans only apply when no specific offer or tier is selected.
No. Changing the default plan only affects new subscription signups. Existing subscribers remain on whatever plan they originally subscribed to.
